A turbo system or a turbocharger is a mechanical device fitted to a vehicle’s engine to provide greater power and improve the overall performance. Many car manufacturers now equip the engine with a pre-fitted turbocharger.
Turbochargers ensure greater airflow into the combustion chamber and ensure a more efficient combustion process. Unlike superchargers, they do not draw power from the engine and thus do not make the car feel sluggish. Turbochargers provide more power to your vehicle with the same engine size.
The working principle of turbochargers and why they should be used are discussed below:
A turbo system consists of two small air fans that are also known as impellers or gas pumps, joined by a metal shaft. These fans sit on the same metal shaft and they spin together. One of these fans also known as a turbine is spun by hot air.
This turbine is connected to another turbine that sucks the air and then compresses it to the engine. When this compressed air goes into the engine, it provides greater power to it. This is because as more compressed air can now enter the combustion chamber, more fuel can be added for enhanced power.
The bigger and more efficient the turbocharger will be, the more power it will provide the engine. You can keep increasing its size to derive more power; however, you will hit a threshold limit.
The engine cylinders have a limit to how much fuel they can burn. There is also only so much air that can be forced to the engine cylinders and only so much exhaust that can be expelled. Hence, there are limiting factors to how much extra power you can get from a turbocharger.
Why You Should Use Turbo System
Turbochargers are versatile and can be used in any type of vehicle-car, truck, bus, etc. They are compatible with both petrol and diesel engines. The biggest advantage of using a turbo system is that you get more power for the same size of the engine.
It does not require the engine’s power to work and does not drain your vehicle’s power. Turbochargers also help to improve fuel efficiency. This is generally achieved by the manufacturers by downsizing the engine and then adding a turbocharger to it.
The smaller turbocharged engine will have similar performance and due to lesser displacement, the fuel efficiency will improve.
